BE PART OF THE SOLUTION

To the citizens of the world,

On the morning of June 5, 2009, Peruvian police opened fire and killed Indigenous peoples and supporters protecting the Amazon Rainforest. Soon after, an uprising began leading to an important change for Indigenous peoples.

Indigenous leaders are now in direct dialogue with the highest levels of government.

However, the Amazon in Peru - our planet's second largest rainforest - is still in danger. If development plans continue (including intensive oil drilling, mining, logging, and large scale farming), the entire Amazon will be on the verge of permanent ecological collapse within the next 10-20 years.

It's crucial we take a stand for Mother Earth and all our relations.

We call upon our sisters and brothers from around the world to help support our relatives in South America by sending a message. Please request that the Obama administration take a stand in defense of Indigenous peoples' human rights in Peru by endorsing the United Nations "Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples" and insuring Indigenous Peoples' right to free, prior and informed consent at the 2009 UN Climate Change conference in Copenhagen, Denmark.

We also ask that you encourage the media to fully cover the struggle of Indigenous peoples on the front lines of climate change. For they are protecting the world's last remaining wild-places that are essential to the survival of life on earth. All life is connected. All life is sacred.

thanks for posting this -- if it's okay, I would like to post it to some Sentinel comms that might also be interested. Jim psent 18 months stranded in the jungles of Peru before the series began, which is how he got his Sentinel powers.
